Since my jaw joints, or TMJs, were dislocated during my wisdom teeth extraction in January 2007, I’ve had to travel from the DC area to Staten Island for the following surgeries: — NOVEMBER 15, 2007: Bilateral arthroscopic surgery (left disc was sutured back into place; right disc was just repositioned; both discs were repaired and cleaned out) — OCTOBER 20, 2008: Left open-joint surgery (Mitek anchor drilled into the mandible and used to anchor disc into place; abdominal fat graft harvested and placed in joint as a “cushion”) — APRIL 6, 2009: Right open-joint surgery (same as above…Mitek anchor drilled into the mandible and used to anchor disc into place; abdominal fat graft harvested and placed in joint as a “cushion”) — DECEMBER 21, 2009: Bilateral open-joint surgery (both joints were “encapsulated” with scar tissue to the point that they were not functioning, so the scar tissue/encapsulation was broken up and my joints were freed and cleaned out) Along with these surgeries, I’ve had around 10 in-office procedures, most of which have been with my surgeon in New York. I’ve had two procedures with my local surgeon in DC Because all of these surgeries and procedures have failed (along with many types of PT and alternative medicine), I am getting bilateral total joint replacement. My surgery is scheduled for Monday, August 9th. You can follow my “journey,” pre-op and post-op, at www.abbystmjjourney.com. Also, please feel free to e-mail me with any questions about TMJ
