Since my jaw joints, or TMJs, were dislocated during my wisdom teeth extraction in January 2007, I’ve had to travel from the DC area to Staten Island for many surgeries. On August 9, 2010, I had what is hopefully my last surgery for many years: bilateral TMJ total joint replacement. Both of my degenerated and diseased TMJs were removed and replaced with custom TMJ Concepts joints. My surgeon, Dr. David Hoffman (affiliated with Staten Island University Hospital), performed the surgery. The total OR time was about 5 hours. I was in the hospital for 4 nights, and just 3 weeks after the surgery, I attended the first day of my senior year of high school.
